My favourite C64 game of them all. System 3's masked ninja works his way across the isometric screens of Lin Fen island toward the shogun Kunitoki: wastelands, gardens, dungeons and the palace, collecting weapons, solving the odd object puzzle, and fighting anyone who objects. The graphics were simply gorgeous, screen after screen that looked painted, and the soundtrack by Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees is top-shelf SID from the first note.
The Last Ninja stands entirely on its own: not a conversion, not a licence, just the C64 doing something nothing else did. It is the reason the ninja's eyes are watching you behind this very page, Steinar Lund's cover painting deserved more than a shelf ;) I kept the whole series on my shelf too, but the first one is the one I call my all-time favourite.
