1985 · Melbourne House
The one that started it all for me: The Way of the Exploding Fist was the first game I ever owned, on cassette of course. Melbourne House built a proper karate simulator, eighteen moves on one joystick, bouts decided by clean technique rather than button mashing, all under the eye of a bearded master who was impossible to impress.
I will admit it here: the digitised scream on the loading screen genuinely scared me the first time the tape ran. Worth it though. Once it loaded, my friends and I wore that game out, and the roundhouse to the head still lives in my thumbs. I even keep an original copy on the shelf today.
